Group Work

In this project, students will work in groups to:

• select and research a city to find its current population;
• estimate the number of children, ages birth to 10 years, in the city by finding 1/10th of the city’s population;
• use the given poverty rate to estimate the number of children living in poverty by multiplying the calculated number of children by the poverty rate fraction;
• choose a scenario containing details about a fictional city;
• estimate the number of children between birth and ten years and calculate the approximate number of those children living in poverty who will be using the clinics’ Vaccines for Children program; and
• calculate the number of doses of each vaccine needed for the clinics in the fictional city.
   

Materials Needed:

• City Data Worksheet (one copy for each student)
• appropriate research resources, such as internet access or a current almanac
• Proposal Planning Packets (one copy for each student)
• Students will access the scenarios online.
   

Final Report

Individually students will:

• calculate the amount of eight different vaccines that the clinic will use in one year; and
• estimate the cost of purchasing the required vaccines for the clinics.

Students should have access to the worksheets from group work as they complete the final report.

Extension Activities

Explore how differences in rounding place impact the final estimates of clinics and medication needed.

Calculate the vaccine costs of running clinics for insured patients in the same city.

Extra Support for Struggling Students

Provide specific websites for references about population.

Provide printed tables containing required data.

Provide calculators or multiplication tables to assist with calculations.

Add selected values to some tables in final response packet.
